Case

The challenge

You do not buy yarn by name alone. A customer searches by material, yarn weight, needle size and colour, and wants to know how many metres are on a ball. A standard webshop does not know those properties. The shop also sells kits made up of several products, the owner sells at markets too, and the stock has to be right across all of it.

Case

The solution

  • A catalogue that understands yarn. Every product has a brand, material, length, weight, yarn weight and needle size, with colours as variants and stock per colour. Customers filter on those and search the whole shop, even with a typo.
  • Yarn kits. Kits made up of several products, with a page and a price of their own.
  • Checkout. Payment through Mollie, with the payment methods that belong to the customer's country. Discount codes, a wishlist and customer accounts; ordering works without an account too.
  • Shipping and pick-up. Shipping with PostNL or DHL, with shipping costs per country and a threshold for free shipping of its own. Shipping labels are created from the admin through MyParcel, and customers can also pick up their order at a market where the shop has a stall.
  • Admin for the owner. Products and variants, also through a CSV import, stock with warnings, orders, invoices as PDF, discount codes, blog and text pages, and a report of revenue per destination country.
  • Findable and privacy-friendly. Pages are rendered on the server, with a sitemap and a Google Shopping feed. The visitor statistics are the shop's own and work anonymously without consent.

Project Overview

Stitch 'n Bitch is an online yarn shop: yarn, crochet hooks, books and ready-made yarn kits for anyone who crochets or knits. I designed and built the webshop, from the shop customers see to the admin the owner uses to handle her stock, orders and shipping.

The technology behind this project
  • Laravel 12 with a MySQL database
  • React 19 with Inertia, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS 4, with server-side rendering
  • Search and filtering with Meilisearch through Laravel Scout
  • Payments through Mollie, shipping labels for PostNL and DHL through MyParcel
  • Background jobs with Redis and Laravel Horizon
  • Hosting through Laravel Forge, monitoring with Sentry
  • Automated tests with PHPUnit, Vitest and Playwright, run on every change in GitHub Actions
